So May brought the end of my second to last semester at ISU and the beginning of my new internship with the Federal Highway Administration. It was definitely an interesting semester with all my activities, school, job, and of course making cakes. I am looking forward to my internship and my last semester of my undergraduate degree.
So this month I made 6 cakes. The first cake is a naval officer hat cake. For this cake I used an actual officer hat to make a pattern. I used Amazing Mold Putty available at Hobby Lobby to make a mold of the officer crest and side buttons. I used fondant with the mold to make a crest. This cake was made for the ISU Naval ROTC graduating seniors.

The second cake was made for a photo shoot for a feature on the ISU homepage. The art director wanted a cake that I was "working on" and was related to civil engineering. I decided to make a bridge cake. I choose a simple beam bridge design for the cake. I used threaded carriage bolts to hold the top of the bridge in place.
The next cake was made for an intern in my office who was leaving. This was just a simple sheet cake with the FHWA Iowa division symbol that was made with fondant and hand-painted.
The next cake was my very first all buttercream wedding cake. Luckily I received a dvd on how to decorate buttercream cakes at the Iowa State Fair last year, so I felt a little more comfortable making this cake. I made the flowers out of gumpaste and colored them with petal dust. The green sprigs are plastic.
The next cake is a 3-D representation of the TCU hand symbol. I made the internal structure using 1/4in copper pipe and bent it to form a hand shape. I used white cake and modeling chocolate to form around the structure.
The last cake is a birthday cake I made for the sister of my brother-in-law. She is a huge ISU fan, so I made a cake to reflect that. The cy-bird is painted fondant.
Well that is all the cakes I made for the month of May. I have some awesome cakes on the schedule for the rest of the summer that includes a standing guitar, DJ setup, 3-D dog and many more. Stay tuned...
