About
Cake Engineering is owned and operated by Mary Burroughs of Lincoln, NE. Mary has a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and retains a professional engineering licence in the state of Iowa. Mary has been decorating cakes for over fourteen years and has created sculpted cakes for over ten years. She has only taken one basic Wilton Fondant course and has never worked in a professional bakery, has never gone to culinary school and learned all her skills by reading magazines, books, and watching cake decorating shows on tv. Cake Engineering was created to design one of a kind cakes for clients at a reasonable price.
In Fall 2009, Mary won Fourth Place in the KJJY Cool Cakes contest, which allowed her to attend the Des Moines Food and Wine Festival where she got to meet cake star Duff Goldman. At the 2010 Iowa State Fair, Mary won First Place in the Amateur shaped cakes category, and Second Place in the Amateur square wedding cake category. At the 2011 Iowa State Fair, Mary won First Place in the Amateur single tier and Butter cow categories, Second Place in the Amateur mixed shape wedding, square wedding, and shaped cake categories and 4th Place in the Amateur round wedding cake category. At the 2012 Iowa State Fair, Mary won Second Place in the Adult Open shaped cake category. In October 2013, Mary's topsy turvy frog wedding cake was featured on Cake Central as a top water lily cake. At the 2017 Tennessee State Fair, Mary won overall grand champion cake for her UP house inspired cake.
